Peckham Engineering, Inc., offers comprehensive planning, engineering design, project management and construction phase services to Air Carrier and General Aviation airports and industrial facilities.  The integration of these services permits us to provide our clients with an effective means for which unique short-range needs and resulting solutions can be incorporated into broad long-range development projects in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Our Services include:

Runway, Taxiway, and related Runway safety Areas

As a natural step in the growth of airports extensions of airfield facilities is necessary, as these extensions are part of the ALP, advance notice is often had for all projects of this nature. The effects of a runway extension are widespread, taxiways and aprons may need alternations to maintain anticipated service levels of the runway. Safety areas of runways and taxiways need to be adjusted as well as object free areas and ground service facilities such as perimeter roads.

Peckham Engineering, Inc. has designed extensions of runways and taxiways for many airports in Michigan.

Design and construction inspection of runway and taxiway extensions include:

  • Extension of taxiway C and graded safety area for runway 7/25 at Houghton County Memorial Airport
  • Relocation of N/S Runway, rehabilitation of NE/SW Runway and E/W runways at Oakland County International Airport.
  • Overlays of Runways and Taxiways at Oakland-Troy Airport.
  • Bituminous Overlay of Taxiways and Runways at MBS International Airport.
  • Taxiways for Twin County Airport.
  • Taxiways for Oakland County International Airport

Implementation of FAA Design Criteria

One of the strengths of Peckham Engineering, Inc. is that we specialize in Airport planning, design and construction. Our knowledge of FAA Design Criteria is solid which comes from working with them every day. Our experience and understanding of FAA design criteria is easily detected in the work we have performed for an extensive amount of Michigan Airports over the years. Our Library, of FAA regulations and Advisory Circulars, is updated continuously and the application of updates is followed. While working exclusively with Airport clients, Peckham Engineering is still well informed and up to date on design criteria set by DOT on national and state level, the Michigan Vehicle Code as well as design criteria recommended by ADA, AASHTO, ITE, and NFPA to mention a few. The application of other design standards than those of FAA have their place in the design of airport landside facilities.

Airfield Drainage and storm water drainage system design

Even a modest airfield encompasses enormous land area for accumulation of surface water during a rain event. All surface water needs to be rerouted in a way that does not interfere with the safety of ground movements nor the take-offs and landings of aircraft. This is an important task as a mistake in the design can have catastrophic results. Peckham Engineering Inc. always bears this in mind when designing paved areas as well as runway and taxiway safety areas. Though important this task is mostly integrated into the design of other items and seldom considered as the main purpose for the design.

Airline and G.A. Terminal Buildings

The center of activity at any airport is usually the Terminal Building, the Airport Operations Building (G.A. terminal) or the Hangars. The Terminal Building or the Airport Operations building often become an icon for the airport. Conceptual design of Airport Terminal Buildings, Airport Operations Buildings and Hangars are implemented in the Master planning process, which Peckham Engineering, Inc. has extensive experience with. Peckham Engineering Inc. does not have Architectural staff, but we have project management experience of Architectural work and will sublet architectural work to a firm that for each project has been selected in consensus with our client. We have the capabilities to determine the terminal characteristics and operational requirements but sublet the architectural design portion of terminal design. Peckham Engineering, Inc. has designed the Terminal buildings for Cherry Capital Airport, Traverse City as seen to the left, and Manistee County Blacker Airport. Peckham Engineering, Inc has also designed Hangars for several Airports, among them, Cherry Capital Airport and Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport.

Aircraft parking ramp design

Peckham Engineering, Inc. has designed many terminal and general aviation aprons with designated parking areas for aircraft. The first step in that process is to evaluate the current aircraft usage at the airport and to estimate the future needs of tie downs both with respect to total number of tie downs as well as the size distribution of parking places. This step is part of the master planning process but unless the study preceding the master plan is new the study should be reevaluated before design is commenced. Peckham Engineering, Inc. has designed several new aprons/ramps as well as extensions to existing ramps to allow more parking for aircraft at the following airports: Oakland County International Airport, Waterford; MBS International Airport, Freeland; Houghton County Memorial Airport, Calumet; and Antrim County Airport, Bellaire.

We have also designed and inspected construction of hangar taxi streets for several airports, among others are Antrim County Airport, Bellaire; Alpena County Regional Airport, Alpena; Cheboygan City-County Airport, Cheboygan; Cherry Capital Airport, Traverse City; Houghton County Memorial Airport, Hancock/Calumet; Oakland County International Airport, Waterford; and Oakland Troy Airport, Troy.  For Houghton County Memorial Airport Peckham Engineering, Inc designed strengthening of the terminal apron using non-frost susceptible materials.

Airfield Lighting and NAVAIDS

Peckham Engineering, Inc. has designed rehabilitation, replacement and new construction of airfield lighting and Navigational aids for many airports in Michigan. Over the years we have acquired an extensive experience in evaluation of the needs for Navigational Aids as well as Airfield Lighting for airports based on their level of service and desired approach precision. We are very familiar with the procedures required to design and construct navigational aids, including submittals to FAA and MDOT Airports division for Airspace review. Michael St. Mary, one of our Traverse City employees, worked for FAA for thirteen years. During his years with the FAA, Michael worked with Airspace review, review of Master plans and Airport Layout Plans and other submittals to the FAA.

Here are some examples of Navigational Aids and airfield lighting systems that Peckham Engineering, Inc. have designed as well as inspected the installation of:

  • Houghton County Memorial Airport: VOR, ILS, PAPI’s, REIL’s, Wind cones, Rotating Beacon, HIRL/HITL and MIRL/MITL as well as lighting of Aprons
  • Manistee County Blacker Airport: ILS, PAPI’s, VASI’s, REIL’s, MIRL/MITL
  • Oscoda Wurtsmith Airport: ILS, PAPI’s, REIL’s
  • Oakland County International Airport: Rotating Beacon, ILS, VASI’s, PAPI’s, REIL’s
  • Oakland Troy Airport: PAPI

In combination with rehabilitation and/or expansion of navigational aids and airfield lighting systems there is often a need to upgrade the power supply as well. Peckham Engineering, Inc. has experience from several projects where new transformers, Constant Current Regulators, and/or power supply cables have been required as a result of the changes to NAVAIDS or lights. Our on staff Licensed Electrical Engineer has many years experience of design of the necessary power grids for airfield applications.

Aircraft Hangars, Snow Removal Equipment, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting buildings

As much as the terminals and hangars are the public face of an airport, the SRE and ARFF buildings are central in the maintenance and operation of an airport. The location of these buildings is important and equally important is how the airside network of service roads and service lanes is configured. Easy access to and from these buildings will make operations easier as well as shorten response time in case of an emergency. Peckham Engineering, Inc. has designed SRE and/or ARFF buildings for many airports among which are:

Houghton County Memorial Airport: Hancock/Calumet, Michigan

  • Crash/Fire/Rescue/Maintenance Building
  • Sand storage building

Mason County Airport: Ludington, Michigan

Rehabilitation and Expansion of Airport Security Systems, Airfield Fencing, and Airfield marking

Airport Security Systems consist of several items. Some of these include: Card Access Control, Security Cameras, Fences, Manual and Electrically Operated Gates. Peckham Engineering, Inc. has experience with the design and construction inspection of Card Access Control Systems at the Cherry Capital Airport and MBS International Airport. We also inspected the installation of Security Camera System at the Cherry Capital Airport. These systems are integrated and non obtrusive.

Fencing is one of the most prominent security features installed at an airport. Fencing also has safety benefits as well, and at many airports the safety benefits have historically been the more important benefit, keeping wildlife out from the premises.  Peckham Engineering, Inc. has experience of design of security fencing at several airports. Fencing is but one of several security measures that can be undertaken at an airport.  Peckham Engineering, Inc. will make sure that the most feasible measures are installed. The weakest link in a fence is often the gates. Peckham Engineering, Inc. has designed both manual gates and automatic gates controlled by code, remote or integrated in a Card Access Control System.

Peckham Engineering, Inc. has designed and inspected installation of security fencing and wildlife control fencing for these airports among others:

  • Houghton County Memorial Airport
  • Oakland County International Airport
  • Cherry Capital Airport
  • MBS International Airport
  • Oakland Troy Airport
  • Alpena County Regional Airport

Airfield markings are often part of rehabilitation projects, either of pavement or runway/ taxiway lighting. Peckham Engineering, Inc. has designed and inspected rehabilitation of airfield markings at many airports in Michigan both as new markings are painted on runways, taxiways, and aprons as well as rehabilitation, replacement or new construction of signs along runways, taxiways and aprons.

Acquisition of ARFF and Snow Removal Equipment

Both Airport rescue and Fire Fighting vehicles and snow removal equipment are specialized vehicles that are customized to the particular Airports requirements and needs. Customizations are costly and Peckham Engineering, Inc. has many years experience in guiding the acquisition of ARFF and Snow removal equipment for airports throughout the State of Michigan.  Peckham Engineering, Inc. takes great pride in our ability to specify the vehicles that fit the particular airports needs the best.

Rehabilitation and Expansion of Utility Systems

Peckham Engineering, Inc. has extensive experience of design and rehabilitation of utility systems. Our experience includes new construction of sewer force mains and gravity mains, sewer lift station. We have also designed and supervised rehabilitation of sewer mains to prevent infiltration and inflow. Peckham Engineering, Inc. has also designed new Water Distribution systems as well as relocation of other utilities.

Demolition of Buildings, Structures, and other objects as required.

Peckham Engineering, Inc. has specified and supervised the removal or relocation of many buildings, runways, taxiways and other objects at airports over the years. Through pulverization of pavements the old removed pavement can be reused as base course for new construction lowering both cost and environmental impact of the demolition. Peckham Engineering, Inc understands the importance to recycle building materials from demolition and to reuse what can be reused directly on site.
